Here we will get to know each other and ask and answer questions

Dear Mr. Tahasoni, When it comes to language proficiency, I have nothing before you. You and I both know that compared to you, I am nothing in this regard. However, when it comes to being analytical, hats are always off to me. I read my feedback thoroughly_ twice. The tutor held it up to scrutiny wearing his glasses of personal beliefs. Had this person pointed out something related to the theories presented in the book, I would surrender like a soldier. Do you not think that raters morally are supposed to be disinterested and impartial? Please avoid using the term “petty fights to no avail,” because that is insulting to my stand. I do not know why I am being emotional in your opinion? How come I am not being right? Is not there a tiny teeny chance that I might be the one who is right? Have you read my assignment? Did you know that mine and that of yours had a lot in common because the night before submission I got my hands on your great work? Did you know that I was surprised to see we had so much similar going on in our minds? What does it strike you when you hear I have to resubmit the thing? Bad things, like injustice, may not be possible to be stopped; they can be pointed out, can’t they? Enjoy your day! Hi :)

I read the post by two TESOL coursemates and thought a few points need mentioning.

Let me first clarify my stance here. I am not an agent of IRAN IELTS and they don't pay me to defend them. I, like many of you, have faced complications as a result of the mess in the TESOL course and have made even more calls than u guys have to follow up on the various stages of my own course and certificate. However, I refuse to see things emotionally and engage myself in petty fights to no avail.

Second, your problem seems rather technical. Instead of coming up with the bright idea of submitting your answers in such a fashion, you could have simply submitted them like you would in any other multiple-choice test. When you choose to complicate things, complications follow. There is nothing to worry about should your answers be correct so just resubmit. Mind you, your submissions will be checked in the UK and your tutors are not technological wizards. Something might have gone wrong. What I did was to submit both in PDF and Word format to make sure everything went OK. PDF files sometimes play nasty and won't just show up correctly if a third party PDF reader is used, so it's quite possible that your marker ran into a similar technical problem.

Now to the main point. I wish to inform my fellow tesolists here that YOUR TUTORS WERE BRITISH! Over 1/3 of my own coursemates never made it to the final. The reason? Many, like you, were EXPECTING their tutors to be more easygoing. What the heck is that supposed to mean? For god's sake people! You are not taking a TKT course! This is TESOL, equal to CELTA, equal to two years of undergraduate study in the UK, and itself a level five certificate in England! Is it supposed to be easy? HELL NO! All I'm trying to say all along is that you need to be professional and take whatever it is you are doing very serious. My friend, Farhang Bohlool, was a certified CELTA holder but he still worked hard to make it at each and every stage never underestimating the markers' attitude towards faults and errors.

So buckle up and remember, the most difficult part is still left: the final exam needs you to have completely undrestood the concepts in the three modules. Check www.tahasoni.com/tesol for resources and if you need help, just email me or Mr Bohlool for help.

Last night feedbacks were emailed. The results broke hearts. Almost everyone has been asked to resubmit. I would like to see what Mr. Tahasoni, who seems to be defending this course all the time, makes of it. I would like him to check on my assignment to see that there is very little difference between the one I did and the one he did. We both share the same amount of experience in teaching, 10 years, though I find him more competent in English language skills. How come I have to resubmit? I have read the comments, and immediately felt the anger that went through my feedback.

All the tesolists around me had the same case: resubmission. Will Mr. Tahasoni, once again, find us guilty and them, innocent?

Though almost everyone passed module 1 assignment, It seems that almost no-one has passed module 3 assignment

You and I, as teachers, better know if a man really wants to be critical in assignment checking, he will, most certainly, be able to pick up faults and if he, as sometimes ordered by the course leader, will be able to be more easygoing, therefor, in most cases, subjective checking replaces the objective; as far as the leader policies are concerned

I really expected this last and yet late assignment marking to be more easygoing and to let the students take the exam with peace of mind; this assignment feedback release, just 5 days before the final exam, has only put more stress and anxiety on the TESOL students

Something to notice, is that my assignment marking was done on May 26th, whereas 17 days later; now on June 13th, the feedback has been mailed to me

I will not go through detailed feedback discussion, as it's more subjective and let the more competent ones to discuss about it; I will consider a clear example, where you can find unfair question marking

Everyone, on the earth, knows that pdf file is displayed exactly the same on every pdf reader

take a look at the below snapshot

Best regards

Dear Dr. Saadati,

This is Mohammaditabar, student of MA in TEFL. I believe you clearly remember me because I was invited by you to take IELTS again to achieve 9. I failed of course. To pursue the dream of becoming an IELTS examiner, I enrolled in TESOL course, a decision I regretted until I read this blog and found out how kindly you took care of us. Below are my words on this course. I hope you give them a thorough read.

The advent of this course for the first time drove my morale to the sky for many reasons one of which was mentioned above. The other reason was I could finally have professional teachers in my IELTS House. Five of my teachers made it to this course; two were rejected for some unknown reasons. Their money was refunded. This incident raised many questions as to why.

The course began late. As far as I remember, there was a call from your secretary indicating so. Then there was no follow-up email; none, indeed. A month or so later, we unexpectedly received an email from Sara Varenese that we only had one week to complete our assignment. Hurriedly, my teachers and I worked on the assignment and finished it in time. The news of the first assignment hit us hard; it just came out of nowhere. That is why I decided to call your office in Mashhad. I did; the answer was disappointing. They said that this team did not work there anymore. They asked us not to call anymore.

The second assignment went well, so did the third one. However, soon there came an email indicating the date of our final exam. It was, as is, set right in the middle of final exam season of all universities in IRAN; we sent letters to our tutor only to find out that there was no way the test could be postponed. We had no one to reach out for help in IRAN. Our friends called your office in Tehran, but your secretaries told us to call Mashhad, that they had nothing to do with it. This was in sharp contradiction with what we had heard months earlier that that office had been closed. You see how easy it is to feel uneasy when such contradictory words are heard?

Anyway, a few days ago, we realized that our tutor’s email was suspended as still is. It was on Vacation-Reply. We wanted, as still so, to know how we were going to be assessed. We wanted to know about the question types and so on. This added more fuel to all the suspicions that we had, to all the hostility that had built in us towards this course. Then we realized the email of TEASOL TEAM was also suspended.  Worse just came to worst.

Long story short, finally, you received a phone call from our dear course mate MR. Shafee that has brought us to a point where we all feel a lot better now, at least my teachers and I do.

Such excellent movements must be appreciated by everyone, Dr. Saadati. This country owes you this TESOL course, but what we have gone through was all anxiety in great magnitude and a large amount of distrust. I have even sent some emails to my tutor whose tone may not have been the best of tones. What could I have done?  My dream was lying shattered before my eyes.

Next time, in the following course, if there is any, greater care should be exercised as to have a higher rate of satisfaction from the participants.

Last but not least, thank you endlessly for setting up this course and many thanks go to you for taking care of us.

Hey all,

I was on the first TESOL course and graduated with merit. None of us have received our certificates yet and frustration abounds. But, well, all I can say is that I was actually expecting much of this to happen.

It may seem to you that you have been subjected to loads of torture, but what else can you expect? Have you ever seen another course, virtual or non, in this country that has been set up and run  hassle-free and based on a specific and set schedule? There are so many decision points and decision makers and this all culminates towards the end of the course resulting in a web of problems and ensuing frustration.

Let's also remember that most of these irregularities are because your course runners are half-Iranian and half-British. It is natural to see loads of problems in scheduling, feedback and troubleshooting because communication between these elements is not as easy as one might think. There will be not much room left for reconsiderations and reassessments. Of course, at least with our group, there was a second chance for those who failed to make the pass grade at each assignment so if you failed it twice, whatever your teaching background, we did not reckon there would be much room left for protest.

We had bigger problems like the seminars getting rescheduled - the third was actually never held! - but we are teachers! We are used to facing even bigger problems and improvising our way out of them. I saw this all as a test of my abilities. I don't mean I was never angry. I called them just yesterday and DEMANDED to get a certificate because of a pending job application.

Now a few of the points you have mentioned need a little bit of reconsideration:

  - First, attending a course does not automatically guarantee a pass mar and that does not concern how much money you have paid. Have you ever heard of those who fail a CELTA course for which you have to pay $1600-2500?! What would they have to say? I paid therefore I pass?!

 - Second, having THIRTEEN years of experience does not guarantee a pass either. I had ten and found out a huge number of inconsistencies and unacceptable practices in my teaching attitudes and approaches. I know many with a lot more who are teaching based on outdated and unacceptable approaches. The reason why we took this course, or at least my own reason, was not to get a mere certificate, but to improve, correct and replace whatever needs improvement, correction or replacement.

 - Third, at least in our course, you could make mistakes and still make the grade in any assignment. You can find all my assignments and their feedbacks on my website (www.tahasoni.com). You can see that I have made mistakes and still made it to the Merit mark. I wasn't alone as many others did as well.

Please remember that I'm not being supportive of the TESOL administration but just being realistic. I am also very sure that the education I received in this course, although mostly in theory and not in practice, was unparalleled and my tutor was more than helpful. Whether they issue the certificate or not (in which case I will be the first to appear at their doorstep with a police officer), I have learnt a lot and I appreciate the experience.

Cheers and good luck with your final exam :)
